Richard Carapaz is an Olympic gold medalist and Grand Tour winner, celebrated for his aggressive climbing style and consistent performances in professional cycling’s most demanding races. After clinching the general classification at the 2019 Giro d’Italia, Richard Carapaz solidified his status as a premier talent in professional cycling, becoming the first Ecuadorian and second South American to win a Grand Tour. Carapaz turned professional in 2017 with Movistar Team, quickly making an impact. In 2018, he secured his first professional victories, winning a stage and the overall classification at the Vuelta a Asturias.
The pinnacle of his career with Ineos came in 2021 when he secured the gold medal in the men’s road race at the Tokyo Olympics, a historic first for Ecuador in cycling. In 2021, he also won the Tour de Suisse and achieved a third-place overall finish in the Tour de France. This made him the first cyclist to achieve an Olympic road race gold medal and a podium finish in each of the three Grand Tours, further cementing his elite status. Since joining EF EducationEasyPost in 2023, Carapaz has maintained his dominance, winning the Ecuadorian National Road Race Championship in his debut year with the team.
He followed this with a victory in the National Time Trial Championship in 2024. His 2024 season also saw a remarkable performance at the Tour de France, where he claimed a stage win and the coveted mountains classification, becoming the first Ecuadorian to do so. During the 2024 Tour, Carapaz also wore the yellow jersey for one stage, marking another significant milestone as the first Ecuadorian to achieve this feat. With a stage win in each of the three Grand Tours by 2024, Carapaz consistently demonstrates his attacking style and unwavering pursuit of victory on the global cycling stage.
