Richard Christy

Thomas Richard Christy Jr. was born on April 1, 1974, in Fort Scott, Kansas, and raised on a farm in Redfield, Kansas. His early musical influences included Kiss and Meat Loaf, evolving to heavy metal acts like Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, and Iron Maiden. Christy began playing drums at age ten after hearing Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher.” He developed his drumming skills through instructional videos and live performances with local bands like Syzygy and Bung Dizeez, making his first professional strides after graduating from Uniontown High School in 1992.

Christy’s music career officially began in 1992, joining Public Assassin in Springfield, Missouri, and working as an electrician. In 1996, he co-founded Burning Inside and relocated to Orlando, Florida, a move pivotal for his career. During his eight years in Florida, he lived frugally, at one point practicing drums in a storage unit. He gained significant recognition in the heavy metal scene, joining and touring with bands such as Acheron, Death, Control Denied, Iced Earth, and Leash Law. A notable turning point was meeting Chuck Schuldiner of Death in 1997, leading to his work on “The Sound of Perseverance” (1998) and “The Fragile Art of Existence” (1999) with Control Denied. He toured extensively, performing at major festivals like Dynamo Open Air in the Netherlands and Wacken Open Air in Germany.

In 2004, Christy transitioned to radio, joining The Howard Stern Show in New York City after winning the “Get John’s Job” contest. This move brought a temporary hiatus from active music. On the show, he became known for prank calls, song parodies, and various comedic stunts. He also developed skills as a stand-up comedian, performing on the Killers of Comedy Tour. He returned to music in 2009, forming his metal supergroup, Charred Walls of the Damned, releasing albums in 2010, 2011, and 2016. Beyond music and radio, Christy has explored film and television, writing and directing independent films, acting in productions like “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” (2007) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2017), and voice acting for Adult Swim shows.
