About

Richard Holman Hatch Jr., born April 8, 1961, rose to public prominence as the first-ever winner of the reality television series ‘Survivor’ in its debut season, ‘Survivor: Borneo’ in 2000. Prior to his television career, Hatch was a corporate trainer and consultant, running his own business, Tri-Whale Training. He pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Management and Applied Behavioral Sciences from National Louis University and studying education and counseling at Providence College. His early life also included military service, joining the United States Army in 1980 and becoming a West Point cadet. Hatch’s strategic approach to the game, including forming alliances, was groundbreaking for reality television and cemented his place in its history. He publicly came out as gay during his time on ‘Survivor: Borneo’ and, at 39, became a notable figure for his openness and unconventional methods on screen.

Hatch’s career after ‘Survivor: Borneo’ included appearances in ‘Survivor: All-Stars’ in 2004, ‘The Celebrity Apprentice 11’ in 2011, ‘The Biggest Loser: Temptation Nation’ in 2016, and ‘House of Villains’ in 2024. He also authored the 2000 book ‘101 Survival Secrets: How to Make $1 Million, Lose 100 Pounds and Live Happily Ever After.’ However, his post-Survivor life was also marked by legal challenges. In 2006, he was convicted of tax evasion for failing to report his ‘Survivor’ winnings and other income, leading to a 51-month prison sentence. He served an additional nine months in prison from March to December 2011 for not amending his tax returns for 2000 and 2001. A civil lawsuit in 2022 ordered him to pay a $3.3 million tax bill, reflecting interest and penalties owed on his unreported income.

His personal life included a marriage to an Australian woman from 1985 to 1990 and a later marriage to Emiliano Cabral in Nova Scotia in 2005, which ended in divorce in 2017. Notably, Hatch donated sperm hundreds of times during his time at George Mason University, resulting in two biological children whom he met in 2011. While Hatch’s early adoption of alliance strategy revolutionized ‘Survivor’ gameplay, his subsequent legal issues related to tax evasion became a significant turning point in his public life, illustrating the importance of financial compliance even for high-profile individuals.
