Rob Pannell was born on December 11, 1989, and grew up in Smithtown, New York. He attended Smithtown High School West, where he excelled in lacrosse, leading Long Island in scoring during his senior year with a school record of 130 points. He was named offensive MVP and earned a spot on Newsday’s All-Long Island second team in 2007, also receiving High School All-American honors. Following high school, Pannell completed a post-graduate year at Deerfield Academy, setting another lacrosse record with 99 points in a single season and earning the Stewart Lindsay Jr. Award for Outstanding Attackman in Division I high school lacrosse.
Pannell continued his lacrosse career at Cornell University, where he became a four-time All-American. He was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2009 and earned the Ivy League Player of the Year award three times (2010, 2011, 2013). In 2011 and 2013, he received the Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the NCAA’s Most Outstanding Player. In 2013, Pannell also won the Tewaaraton Trophy, an award for the most outstanding American college lacrosse player. He set Cornell’s school records for career points with 354 and career assists with 204. During his collegiate career, he led Cornell to the NCAA championship final in 2009 and the semifinals in 2013.
Professionally, Pannell was the first overall pick in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the New York Lizards. He earned the 2013 MLL Rookie of the Year award. He secured an MLL Championship with the Lizards in 2015 and was named the MLL MVP in 2018. Pannell joined the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) in 2020, being drafted third overall by Atlas Lacrosse Club. He has consistently been recognized as a PLL All-Star since 2021. Internationally, Pannell has represented the U.S. Men’s National Team three times (2014, 2018, 2023), earning two gold medals (2018, 2023) and an All-World selection twice (2014, 2018). Beyond playing, he established The Attack Academy in 2018, focusing on youth offensive skill development.
