The incredible French athlete Ronny Turiaf is a former professional basketball player, who spent ten seasons in the NBA, most notably shooting hoops for the LA Lakers, and the Miami Heat. He was WCC Player of the Year in 2005, and NBA champion in 2012. In 2009 he set up the Heart to Heart Foundation to provide medical care to children without health insurance.
Born and raised in Martinique, Turiaf moved to Paris in 1998 when he was a teenager and attended the National Institute of Physical Education. There he honed his basketball skills and a year later was playing with the French U-18 national team, going on to win a Gold medal with them at the 2000 FIBA Europe U-18 Championship. He left France in 2001 to attend Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where he played for four years, and graduated with a degree in sports management, communication and French. His professional career started in 2005 when he was picked in the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He moved to the Golden State Warriors in 2008, and then to the New York Knicks in 2010.
During the NBA lockout in 2011 Turiaf briefly returned to France to play for ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne. He went back to the United States in December 2011 and was traded to the Washington Wizards. Then in March 2012 he was traded to Miami Heat, and went on to win his first NBA championship with them in June. The following month he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. In 2013 he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but during his second season only played two games due to injuries. He announced his retirement in 2016. On the international stage he represented France at the 2003, 2007, and 2009 EuroBasket, at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and at the 2012 London Olympics.
