Rose Abdoo

Rose Abdoo, born Rose Marie Abdoo on November 28, 1962, in Detroit, Michigan, has established herself as a notable American actress and comedian. Her father, Peter Abdoo, was of Lebanese heritage and worked as a budget analyst for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, while her mother, Mary, was of Dominican heritage and a homemaker. Abdoo’s career began in Chicago’s improvisational theater scene, where she honed her skills at the Improv Institute and spent four years with The Second City. During her time at The Second City, she developed acclaimed one-woman shows, “Who Does She Think She Is?” and “Get to the Part About Me.”

After graduating from Southfield High School, Abdoo pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 1984 and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from Michigan State University. Her academic background and early theatrical experiences laid the foundation for a successful career spanning over three decades. One of her early notable achievements was winning a Joseph Jefferson Award in 1991 for “Best Actress in a Revue” for her role in The Second City’s production, “We Made a Mesopotamia, Now You Clean It Up.” She also collaborated with comedy figures such as Bob Odenkirk and Conan O’Brien on the short-lived variety program “Happy Happy Good Show.”

Abdoo has accumulated over 110 television and movie credits throughout her career. She is widely recognized for her recurring role as Gypsy, the Stars Hollow mechanic, in “Gilmore Girls” (2002–2007) and its Netflix revival, “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” (2016). For her dual role in the revival, she received the TVLine Best Comedy Revelation of 2016. Her film credits include George Clooney’s Oscar-nominated “Good Night, and Good Luck.” (2005), “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997), “The Guilt Trip” (2012) with Barbra Streisand, and “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” (2021). Abdoo has also lent her voice to several characters in “Hotel Transylvania 1&2” and the animated series “Madagascar: A Little Wild.” More recently, she has taken on the roles of Selma in Hulu’s “Reboot” (2022) and Josefina in HBO/Max’s “Hacks” (2021–present), further solidifying her presence in contemporary television. Her extensive work demonstrates a consistent commitment to her craft, earning her recognition such as the L.A. Weekly’s Female Solo Performer of the Year award.
