Rose Gertrude Namajunas was born on June 29, 1992, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Lithuanian parents. Her early life involved training in various martial arts, beginning with Taekwondo at age 5, where she earned a junior black belt by age 9. She also practiced Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. During high school, she trained in kickboxing and mixed martial arts at Roufusport and was an accomplished wrestler. This diverse martial arts background laid the foundation for her professional career.
Namajunas started her amateur MMA career in 2010, achieving a perfect record of 4-0. Her professional debut in Invicta FC in January 2013 showcased her submission skills, earning her ‘Submission of the Night’ bonuses. She transitioned to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2013, competing in ‘The Ultimate Fighter 20’, where she reached the finals. Despite losing the final, her performances earned her two $25,000 season bonuses for ‘Performance of the Season’ and ‘Fight of the Season’. Her UFC career saw her secure significant victories, including submission wins against Angela Hill and Paige VanZant.
A significant turning point in Namajunas’s career came in November 2017 when she dramatically defeated Joanna Jędrzejczyk by KO to become the UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion. She successfully defended this title in a rematch in April 2018. After losing and regaining the strawweight title, defeating Zhang Weili in April 2021, she made history as the first female fighter to regain a UFC Championship belt. She defended her title against Weili Zhang in November 2021 before losing it to Carla Esparza in May 2022. Namajunas later moved to the flyweight division in 2023, where she continues to compete.
