Rudy Gobert-Bourgarel was born on June 26, 1992, in Saint-Quentin, Aisne, France. His father, Rudy Bourgarel, played college basketball in the United States and professional basketball in France, influencing Gobert’s early interest in the sport. Gobert began his basketball career in 2003 with the JSC St-Quentin club, later joining Saint-Quentin BB and then Cholet Basket’s junior training center in 2007. By 2010, he was a key player for the French under-18 national team, leading in scoring and rebounding at the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. From 2009 to 2011, Gobert primarily played for Cholet Basket’s junior team, making his senior team debut in the 2010–11 season. His performance steadily improved, averaging 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in 2011–12, and 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2012–13, before declaring for the NBA draft.
In 2013, Gobert entered the NBA Draft, setting records at the NBA Draft Combine for wingspan (7 feet 8.5 inches) and standing reach (9 feet 7 inches), earning him the nickname “The Stifle Tower.” He was selected 27th overall by the Denver Nuggets but was immediately traded to the Utah Jazz. His rookie season in 2013–14 saw him play in 45 games, with some time spent in the NBA Development League with the Bakersfield Jam. His career accelerated in the 2014–15 season, where he became a more prominent player, recording a career-high 24 rebounds in a March 2015 game and finishing third in the NBA Most Improved Player Award voting. The subsequent years with the Utah Jazz were marked by significant defensive achievements, including being named NBA Defensive Player of the Year four times (2018, 2019, 2021, and 2024), tying the NBA record. He also earned three NBA All-Star selections (2020-2022) and multiple All-NBA and All-Defensive Team honors. Beyond individual accolades, Gobert led the NBA in blocks in 2017 and in rebounding in 2022.
In July 2022, Gobert was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, marking a new chapter in his NBA career. He made an immediate impact, recording a 23-point, 16-rebound performance in his Timberwolves debut in October 2022. He continued to be a dominant defensive force, anchoring the team’s defense and leading to his fourth NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024. In the 2023-24 season, the Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals, a significant team achievement. Gobert signed a three-year contract extension with the Timberwolves in October 2024, solidifying his long-term commitment to the team. He has also represented the French national team successfully, earning silver medals at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics and bronze medals at the FIBA World Cup in 2014 and 2019, and EuroBasket 2015.
