About

Born in 1979 in a small farming community in central Nebraska, Ryan K Sallans faced early challenges, including a growing realization that his biological sex did not align with his gender identity. Lacking widespread information on transgender experiences in the 1980s, he struggled with discomfort as he grew. After graduating high school, Ryan pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in cultural anthropology and English in 2001, graduating Sigma Tau Delta Honors Society. He continued his studies, obtaining a Master of Arts degree in English with a specialization in creative writing in 2004, and another Master of Arts degree in educational psychology focusing on human health behaviors in 2005.

During his college years, Ryan worked as an outdoor adventure leader and backpacking course instructor, and served as the student coordinator/script writer for SHINE (Students Helping Individuals Nurture Esteem). He also spent three years as a graduate assistant for the University Health Center’s Department of Health Education. Ryan’s personal transition from female to male began in May 2005 in Lincoln, Nebraska. This deeply personal journey became a cornerstone of his professional work. His first job as a health educator, created specifically for his expertise in human sexuality, LGBTQ identities, eating disorders, and body image, allowed him to advocate for transgender healthcare within the organization’s reproductive and sexual health services. In 2011, he launched his career as a self-employed speaker and author.

Over the past two decades, Ryan has become an internationally recognized gender subject matter expert, consultant, and speaker. He has appeared on national television programs such as Larry King Live, Ricki: The New Ricki Lake Show, Trisha, and Cheddar TV. In June 2021, he became the first person outside a jurist to address the United States Courts for a Heritage Month Event, and in 2022, he opened a plenary for federal magistrates on sex and gender topics. Ryan has authored two books, “Second Son” (2012) and “Transforming Manhood” (2019), and has contributed to peer-reviewed journal articles and e-learning courses for medical professionals, issuing over 1400 credit hours to licensed practitioners in the US. He served six years on the board of the Jim Collins Foundation, including a term as vice president from 2018 to 2020.
