Sal Capaccio is a charismatic sports talk host and play-by-play announcer with a passion for the NFL who works for the Buffalo Bills as a beat and sideline reporter. Having grown up in Buffalo, New York, and been immersed in admiration for the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres (the local NHL team), Capaccio’s occupation is now a dream come true for the lifelong fan. He revealed that even as a young boy, instead of the players themselves, he chose to impersonate the voice of iconic Bills’ play-by-play announcer Van Miller, as well as the Sabres’ broadcasters Rick Jeanneret and Ted Darling.
Capaccio now covers all of the Bills’ developments for WGR 550 Sports Radio. He also hosts a radio and television show, writes stories for the station’s website and entertains his fans and fellow Bills’ supporters on his Twitter page, @SalSports. He even has his own theme song preceding his appearances on WGR! He started out studying broadcast journalism at Syracuse University, being active in the campus’ home radio station, eventually serving as the station’s sports director. After college, he spent some time at smaller radio stations and coaching Little League baseball before launching his own podcast called The Buffalo Stampede.
His podcast – which was around when the medium of podcasting was very much in its infancy – allowed him to become a familiar voice to Buffalo sports fans. Through his networking he managed to receive a tip that the Bills were going to sign the Hall of Fame-caliber wide receiver Terrell Owens. He ran the story and broke the news to the Buffalo community, which – despite initial scoffing from the media – indeed came to pass, cementing Capaccio’s reputation as a knowledgeable and trustworthy source. He says that this event is what put him on the map.
In 2014, Capaccio became the Bill’s sideline reporter, and the following year he secured the beat reporter job. Immensely proud of his accomplishments and that he has lived true to his passions, Capaccio is very much in his element working for the Buffalo Bills, and is an admirable figure in the sporting world because of it.
