United States Sam Howell is a professional quarterback who has played for multiple NFL teams, including the Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, and currently the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sam Howell was born on September 16, 2000, in Waynesville, North Carolina. He developed his football skills at Sun Valley High School, where he achieved significant statistics, throwing for 13,415 yards, 145 touchdowns, and rushing for 3,621 yards and 60 touchdowns. He initially committed to Florida State University but later changed to the University of North Carolina after Mack Brown was hired as head coach. At North Carolina, Howell became the first true freshman to start at quarterback, setting school records for touchdown passes in a single season with 38 and career passing yards with 10,283.
He continued his collegiate career with notable performances, earning ACC Player of the Week honors in 2020 by throwing for 443 yards against Virginia and later setting school records with 550 passing yards and 6 touchdowns against Wake Forest. Howell concluded his college career with 92 touchdown passes and 10,283 passing yards, both school records. In 2022, Howell was selected by the Washington Commanders in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. He made his first NFL start in Week 18 of the 2022 season, securing a 26-6 win against the Dallas Cowboys. In 2023, he started all 17 games for the Commanders, throwing for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Howell’s professional career has seen several trades. In March 2024, he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, where he played primarily as a backup quarterback. In April 2025, he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, and then again in August 2025, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Throughout his transitions, Howell has maintained a professional commitment to his roles and continued to develop within the NFL.
