Sami Zayn has been signed to WWE since January 2013, performing on various brands including NXT, Raw, and SmackDown, holding multiple championships and participating in high-profile storylines and matches.
El Generico made frequent appearances in the independent promotion Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), winning the PWG World Championship twice and the PWG World Tag Team Championship five times with various partners. He is also the only person to have won both of PWG's annual tournaments, the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament and the Battle of Los Angeles.
El Generico wrestled for Ring of Honor (ROH) from 2004, where he held the ROH World Television Championship once and the ROH World Tag Team Championship once as part of a team with Kevin Steen.
El Generico made semi-regular appearances for DDT Pro-Wrestling and its sister-promotion Union Pro Wrestling in Japan, winning the DDT Extreme Championship and the KO-D Openweight Championship.
Rami Sebei, known professionally as Sami Zayn, was born on July 12, 1984, in Laval, Quebec, Canada to Syrian migrant parents. He commenced his professional wrestling career on March 1, 2002, initially performing under the ring name Stevie McFly. Early in his career, Sebei adopted the masked persona of El Generico, wrestling extensively in independent promotions across North America, Europe, and Japan. He achieved significant recognition in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), where he became a two-time PWG World Champion and a five-time PWG World Tag Team Champion. His accomplishments also include winning both of PWG’s annual tournaments: the Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament in 2010 and the Battle of Los Angeles in 2011. In Ring of Honor (ROH), he held the ROH World Television Championship and the ROH World Tag Team Championship alongside Kevin Steen. He also held the DDT Extreme Championship and KO-D Openweight Championship in Japan’s DDT Pro-Wrestling.
Zayn signed with WWE in January 2013, transitioning to the ring name Sami Zayn and performing without a mask in the developmental brand NXT. He quickly rose through the ranks, capturing the NXT Championship in December 2014. Upon his promotion to the main roster, Zayn continued to achieve significant milestones, including four reigns as WWE Intercontinental Champion and one reign as WWE United States Champion. A notable period of his career involved aligning with The Bloodline faction from April 2022 to January 2023, where he was recognized as an “Honorary Uce.” This storyline earned critical acclaim, being awarded Best Storyline of the Year by ESPN and the New York Post in 2022. Zayn’s narrative within The Bloodline culminated in a reunion with Kevin Owens, leading them to defeat The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 39 in April 2023, headlining the event. His fourth Intercontinental Championship reign began at WrestleMania XL in April 2024, where he ended Gunther’s 666-day reign.
Throughout his career, Sami Zayn has demonstrated a capacity for both compelling underdog babyface roles and effective heel characters. His in-ring style consistently combines aerial maneuvers with hard-hitting strikes, allowing him to compete at a high level against diverse opponents such as John Cena, Seth Rollins, and Shinsuke Nakamura. Beyond wrestling, Zayn is known for establishing the “Sami for Syria” fund in July 2017 to support the Syrian American Medical Society, reflecting his personal commitment to humanitarian causes.
