Super Bowl champion Sean McVay coaches the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League. He made history by becoming the NFL’s youngest head coach when the Rams hired him at the age of 30 in 2017. McVay is also the youngest head coach to have qualified for two Super Bowls, won a Super Bowl, and been named the AP NFL Coach of the Year.
The Rams under McVay went from having the lowest offensive output in the league the previous season to having the top output in 2017, which helped the team win the division. This season was the Rams’ first winning season since 2003 and their first return to the postseason since 2004. Over the coming seasons, McVay led the Rams to two Super Bowl appearances before leading them to their first championship since 1999 in Super Bowl LVI. His success in Los Angeles is credited with changing the NFL’s hiring practises to favour younger head coaches.
Due to McVay’s success as the Rams head coach at a young age, as well as his offensive prowess, NFL organisations have started to prefer younger offensive-minded coaches over more experienced coaches with defensive backgrounds. A number of McVay’s coordinators were promoted to head coaching positions, including Kevin O’Connell, Zac Taylor, Brandon Staley, and Matt LaFleur. In September 2022, the Los Angeles Rams officially announced an extension to McVay’s contract through to the 2026 season.
