About

Sébastien Loeb was born on February 26, 1974, in Haguenau, Alsace, France. He initially pursued gymnastics, becoming a four-time Alsatian champion and once a champion of the French Grand East, placing fifth in the French national championship. Loeb transitioned to racing in 1995. In 1998, he began competing in the French Citroën Saxo Trophy series, winning the title in 1999. His early career progression continued with winning the two-wheel-drive-class French gravel championship in 2000 and the Super 1600 class of the Junior WRC in 2001, securing five out of six events. This success led to him being signed by the Citroën World Rally Team for the 2002 season, marking his entry into the World Rally Championship.

Loeb’s debut WRC season in 2002 saw him achieve his maiden victory at the Rallye Deutschland. In his first full WRC season in 2003, he won three events and finished as runner-up in the championship by a narrow margin of one point. His dominance began in 2004 when he secured his first drivers’ title with six victories, matching a WRC season record. He further cemented his legacy in 2005 by winning ten events, including a record six in a row, and clinching the title by 56 points, breaking a 25-year-old record. Loeb continued his winning streak with eight more victories in 2006, earning his third consecutive title despite missing four rallies due to injury. He then went on to win a record nine consecutive World Rally Championship titles from 2004 to 2012, setting numerous records including most event wins, most podium finishes, and most stage wins. He retired from full-time WRC participation at the end of 2012, but has made selective returns, most notably winning the 2022 Monte Carlo Rally, becoming the oldest driver to win a WRC event.

Beyond rallying, Loeb has pursued diverse motorsport challenges. He made his Dakar Rally debut in 2016, securing second place in 2017, 2022, and 2023. In 2013, he spectacularly won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, setting a new record. He also participated in the FIA GT Series in 2013, scoring four wins, and had successful stints in the World Touring Car Championship in 2014 and 2015, achieving six wins and third place overall in both seasons. From 2016 to 2018, he competed in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, securing two wins and a best finish of fourth overall. In 2022, he won the Extreme E Championship with Team X44 alongside Cristina Gutiérrez, further demonstrating his exceptional adaptability and skill across different racing disciplines.
