Born in Plymouth, Devon, in 1962, Sharron Davies began her swimming career at a young age, representing Great Britain in the national team at just 11. Her Olympic journey commenced at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal when she was 13. The following year, she earned two bronze medals at the 1977 European Championships. Her success continued at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, where, at 15, she secured gold medals in both the 200m and 400m individual medleys, along with a silver and a bronze. A significant milestone in her career was achieving a silver medal in the 400m individual medley at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. After a period away from competitive swimming to focus on media and modelling, Davies returned to the sport in 1989, ultimately earning two additional medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She holds 22 ASA National British Championship titles across various strokes and distances.
Davies transitioned into a prominent media career following her retirement from competitive swimming in 1994. She has been a consistent presence as a commentator for BBC Sport at numerous Olympic Games, including Seoul, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, and London. Beyond sports, her television work includes presenting on Channel 4’s ‘The Big Breakfast’ and ITV’s ‘Ace Reports,’ and appearing as ‘Amazon’ on ‘Gladiators’ in 1995. She also featured on ‘Superstars’ and ‘Dancing on Ice.’ Her written works include her swimming biography ‘Against the Tide’ (1984) and ‘Learn to Swim in a Weekend’ (1992).
Throughout her career, Davies has been a dedicated advocate for various causes. She supported the British Olympic bid for London 2012 by raising awareness and serving as a spokesperson on BBC’s ‘Question Time.’ She is a patron of Disabled Sport England and SportsAid and co-founded the ‘Swim for Life’ charity event alongside Princess Diana, which raised over £10 million. Davies has also publicly voiced her opinions on topics such as transgender participation in sports. In recognition of her contributions to swimming, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1993 New Year Honours.
