Shawn Lemon was born on August 25, 1988, in Charleston, South Carolina. His family later moved to Waldorf, Maryland, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track and field at Westlake High School. During his high school career, Lemon set a single-season record at Westlake and the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference with 21 sacks. As a senior, he recorded 97 tackles and was named first team All-Metro. He continued his football career at the University of Akron, playing for the Akron Zips from 2007 to 2010. During his senior year, he was selected as an All-Mid-American Conference player, leading his team with seven sacks and four fumble recoveries. He concluded his college career with 102 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, five fumble recoveries, and six forced fumbles.
Lemon began his professional career in 2011, initially signing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL before quickly moving to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. His career saw significant movement across various leagues, including the Arena Football League (San Jose SaberCats, Orlando Predators) and the Indoor Football League (Sioux Falls Storm) in 2012, prior to returning to the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos. A pivotal period for Lemon began in 2013 when he joined the Calgary Stampeders. In 2014, he started all 18 games, recording 13 sacks and a CFL league record eight forced fumbles, contributing to the Stampeders’ 102nd Grey Cup victory. This performance led to him pursuing opportunities in the NFL, where he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and later the San Francisco 49ers in 2015.
Returning to the CFL, Lemon played for the Ottawa Redblacks in 2015, followed by multiple stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Argonauts, and BC Lions. In 2016, he was named a CFL East Division All-Star while with the Toronto Argonauts, where he was tied for second in the league with 14 sacks. He secured his second Grey Cup championship in 2017 with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2022, during his second tenure with the Calgary Stampeders, Lemon was named a CFL All-Star and received the Norm Fieldgate Trophy as the West Division’s most outstanding defensive player, with 14 sacks. In 2023, he joined the Montreal Alouettes, achieving his 100th career sack and winning his third Grey Cup championship. Lemon’s career was temporarily interrupted by an indefinite suspension from the CFL in 2024 for betting on league games, but he was conditionally reinstated in July 2025, returning to the Montreal Alouettes.
