Shay Given

Shay Given, a highly accomplished former professional footballer, solidified his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most consistent goalkeepers after contributing to Sunderland winning the Football League First Division title in 1995–96 and Swindon Town securing the Football League Second Division in the same season during his loan spells from Blackburn Rovers. He joined Newcastle United in 1997 for £2.5 million, quickly establishing himself and playing pivotal roles in the club’s FA Cup final appearances in both 1998 and 1999. Given was also instrumental in Newcastle United’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup campaigns, with his consistent performances earning him selections in the prestigious Premier League Team of the Season for 2001–02 and again for 2005–06. Given continued his distinguished career at Newcastle, making his 400th appearance for the club in 2007 and being awarded the Freedom of County Donegal in 2006.
