Known as being one of the best ever goalkeepers to hail from the Republic of Ireland, Shay Given is a two time FA Cup Winner and Football League First Division Winner. As well as being one of the best from Ireland, Given was considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League at his peak. Even though he was not especially tall for a keeper, Given possessed world class reflexes, anticipation, and handling. The Irish shot stopper also amassed 134 caps for his country and kept 52 clean sheets, becoming a part of the exclusive FIFA Century Club.
Given became an established Premier League goalkeeper at Newcastle United, where he went on to become a club legend. He was part of the memorable teams that came runners-up in the 1998 and 1999 FA Cup campaigns, and was named in the Premier League Team of the Season twice when playing for the Magpies. Due to his shot-stopping abilities, Given transferred to Manchester City for £6 million. During his time at City, he helped the club on their way to becoming a major force in the Premier League, with the team qualifying for the Champions League for its first time when Given was between the sticks. After another successful spell at a Premier League club, Given went on to enjoy fruitful stints at Aston Villa and Stoke City.
Given has now gone into coaching, and is part of the first team staff at Derby County. His wealth of experience playing at the highest level will no doubt help to bring the Derby future success.
