About

Séamus John James Given, born on April 20, 1976, in Lifford, County Donegal, Ireland, began his football journey at local amateur side Lifford Celtic. His talent quickly emerged, drawing the attention of Scottish club Celtic, where he signed a year later in 1992, though he never made a first-team appearance. In 1994, he transferred to Blackburn Rovers on a free, and during loan spells, he contributed to Sunderland winning the Football League First Division title in 1995–96 and Swindon Town winning the Football League Second Division in the same season.

Given’s career significantly progressed when he joined Newcastle United in 1997 for £2.5 million. He established himself as a prominent Premier League goalkeeper, playing key roles in Newcastle reaching the FA Cup finals in 1998 and 1999. He was also instrumental in the club’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup campaigns. His consistent performances earned him a place in the Premier League Team of the Season for 2001–02 and 2005–06. In 2009, Given moved to Manchester City for £6 million, contributing to their qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the first time and an FA Cup win in 2011, though he did not feature in the final match. He later played for Aston Villa and Stoke City before retiring from professional football in 2018. For his country, Given earned 134 caps for the Republic of Ireland, playing in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012, solidifying his legacy as one of Ireland’s greatest goalkeepers.

Following his playing career, Given transitioned into coaching, taking on the role of goalkeeping coach at Derby County in June 2018 under Frank Lampard. He continued in his coaching capacity at Derby County, eventually becoming a first-team coach. Given is also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly his support for Macmillan Cancer Support, an issue close to him after losing his mother to cancer at a young age. He consistently used his platform to raise money and awareness for charitable causes throughout and after his playing career.
