Simon Blair Doull was born on August 6, 1969, in Pukekohe, New Zealand. He began his cricket career as a right-arm medium-pacer known for his swing bowling. Doull played for the Northern Districts from 1989/90 to 2001/02, where he developed his skills. His international career for the New Zealand national cricket team spanned from 1992 to 2000, during which he played 32 Test matches and 42 One Day Internationals (ODIs).
Throughout his international career, Doull faced various injuries, including recurring back problems and a significant knee injury during New Zealand’s 1999 tour of England, which ultimately shortened his playing days. Despite these challenges, he achieved notable success, taking 98 wickets in Tests and 36 wickets in ODIs. His career-best bowling figures came in December 1998 during the Boxing Day Test against India at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, where he took 7 wickets for 65 runs. This performance elevated him to a career-high ranking of 6 in the ICC Player Rankings on December 26, 1998.
Following his retirement from international cricket, Doull transitioned into media, becoming a prominent cricket commentator and radio personality. He quickly established himself as a respected voice in the sport, covering various prestigious tournaments and leagues globally. His commentary work includes being part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) commentary team since 2008 and covering the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
