Stephanie Mitelman founded Senseez Pillows, a company that makes vibrating pillows for people with sensory needs, particularly those with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. She appeared on CBC's Dragon's Den successfully pitching her pillows to investors.
Stephanie Mitelman sees clients in her private practice, working with individuals with autism on issues of gender, sexuality, safety, and healthy relationships, as well as providing neuro-inclusive sexuality education and coaching services for teens, adults, couples, and families.
Stephanie Mitelman founded Sexpressions in 2000, which later became Sex Ed Mart. Through Sexpressions, she wrote and published a full line of teaching tools, including a sexual health trivia game and anatomy posters. She continues Sexpressions as a private sexuality education service for individuals, couples, and families with special needs.
Stephanie Mitelman has been part-time faculty at Concordia University since 2005, in the Department of Applied Human Sciences, where she teaches courses on human sexuality, diversity in human relations, and family life education.
Stephanie Mitelman is one of the founding members of the Sexual Health Network of Quebec (former Planned Parenthood of Montreal). This organization provides free sex education sessions to schools across Montreal and advocates for mandatory sex education in Quebec.
Stephanie Mitelman, born on February 25, 1976, has dedicated her career to sex and family life education, with a particular focus on individuals with autism spectrum disorders and other special needs. She holds a Master of Arts degree, is a Certified Sexuality Educator (CSE) through AASECT, and a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) with the National Council of Family Relations. Additionally, she is a member of the Order of Sexologists of Quebec and the International Board of Sexuality Professionals. Mitelman began her academic career as part-time faculty at Concordia University in 2005, within the Department of Applied Human Sciences, where she teaches courses on human sexuality, diversity in human relations, and family life education. Prior to this, she taught a graduate course at McGill University in the Department of Educational Counselling and Psychology for 17 years. Her commitment to accessibility in sex education for diverse populations has earned her recognition, including a nomination for a Teaching Award in Excellence and the 2013 First Tracks Award for Innovation in Sexology.
In 2000, Mitelman founded Sexpressions, which evolved into Sex Ed Mart in 2017. This company provides sex education resources, including teaching tools and publications, and offers training for educators and healthcare professionals across Canada. Sex Ed Mart specifically caters to classrooms and clinics, covering topics such as anatomy, contraception, sexual health, STI prevention, consent, healthy relationships, 2SLGBTQ+ issues, puberty, social media safety, and resources for at-risk youth. In addition to her work with Sex Ed Mart, Mitelman maintains a private practice, Complex Coaching, where she works with clients on issues of gender, sexuality, safety, and healthy relationships.
A key turning point in Mitelman’s career was the establishment of Senseez Pillows in 2012. Motivated by her son’s special needs, she created vibrating pillows designed to assist individuals with sensory requirements, particularly those with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. The company gained recognition, leading to an appearance on CBC’s “Dragon’s Den” web episodes in 2013 and a Gold Stevie Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year in 2015. Through a collaboration with Lekotek in 2014, clinical trials demonstrated the therapeutic benefits of Senseez pillows. Mitelman sold Senseez Pillows in 2019, further cementing her track record in developing practical solutions for special needs communities. She also co-edited “Changes, Changes, Changes: Great Methods for Puberty Education” in 2014, a collaborative effort with William J. Taverner and other associate editors. Mitelman was also a founding member of the Sexual Health Network of Quebec, re-launched in 2004 from the former Planned Parenthood of Montreal.
