Steve Coogan

Steve Coogan was born on October 14, 1965, in Middleton, Manchester, England. His early career involved comedic performance and impression work. He provided voice artistry for the satirical puppet show “Spitting Image” and for television advertisements. In 1989, he appeared in sketches for the ITV game show “The Krypton Factor.” In 1992, Coogan was awarded the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for his performance with John Thomson. During this period, he developed characters such as Paul Calf and Alan Partridge. The character of Alan Partridge, a satirical British sports presenter, originated on the Radio 4 comedy “On the Hour” (1991–1992).

Coogan continued to develop the Alan Partridge character, who became prominently featured in “The Day Today” (1994) and “Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge” (1994). In 1997, he starred in the BBC sitcom “I’m Alan Partridge,” which won two BAFTAs and had a second series in 2002. In 1999, Coogan co-founded Baby Cow Productions with Henry Normal, a company responsible for producing shows like “The Mighty Boosh” and “Gavin & Stacey.” His film career gained momentum in 2002 with roles in “The Parole Officer” and “24 Hour Party People.” He later appeared in films such as “Around the World in 80 Days” (2004) and the “Night at the Museum” trilogy (2006–2014).

In 2013, Coogan co-wrote, produced, and starred in “Philomena,” earning nominations for two Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He played dramatic roles in films like “Marie Antoinette” (2006) and received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Stan Laurel in “Stan & Ollie” (2018), which earned him a BAFTA nomination. Coogan took on the controversial role of Jimmy Savile in the BBC drama “The Reckoning” (2023), receiving a British Academy Television Award nomination for Best Actor. His career has also included touring with stand-up shows featuring his characters, such as “Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge and other less successful characters” in 2008.
