About

Jason Kent Bateman was born on January 14, 1969, in Rye, New York. His early life involved a move to Salt Lake City, Utah, and then to California. His father, Kent Bateman, worked as a film and television director and producer, and his mother, Victoria Bateman, was a flight attendant from Shropshire, England. His sister, Justine Bateman, also became an actress. Bateman began his acting career early, appearing in a Golden Grahams commercial in 1980, followed by his television debut in 1981 on “Little House on the Prairie” as James Cooper Ingalls. This early exposure led to other television roles, including a recurring position on “Silver Spoons” from 1982 to 1984, where he played Ricky Schroder’s friend Derek Taylor. In 1984, he received his own starring role in the NBC sitcom “It’s Your Move.” By the mid-1980s, Bateman had established himself as a teen idol. He also made history as the youngest-ever director in the Directors Guild of America, directing three episodes of “The Hogan Family” (a show he also starred in) at the age of 18.

Bateman’s career experienced a significant resurgence in the 2000s, largely due to his critically acclaimed role as Michael Bluth in the television sitcom “Arrested Development,” which ran from 2003 to 2019. This role earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy in 2005, and an Emmy nomination. During this period, his film career also saw an upward trajectory with supporting roles in films like “The Break-Up” (2006), “Juno” (2007), “Hancock” (2008), and “Up in the Air” (2009). He continued to take on leading roles in comedies such as “The Switch” (2010), “Horrible Bosses” (2011), “Identity Thief” (2013), and “Game Night” (2018). In 2013, he made his feature film directorial debut with “Bad Words,” in which he also starred. He has since directed and produced other projects, including “The Family Fang” (2015) and the Netflix crime drama series “Ozark” (2017–2022).

His work on “Ozark” as Marty Byrde garnered him significant recognition, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2019. He was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series multiple times for “Ozark.” Beyond acting and directing, Bateman expanded his ventures into producing with his company, Aggregate Films, which has a deal with Universal. In 2020, he co-created and launched the popular comedy and talk podcast “SmartLess” with Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, further diversifying his career. He continues to be active in both television and film, with several upcoming acting and directing projects. He has been married to actress Amanda Anka since 2001, and they have two children.
