About

Steve Smith Sr. was born on May 12, 1979, in Los Angeles, California. He attended University High School, excelling in both football and track & field, earning All-Metro League and All-California Interscholastic Federation selections. After graduating in 1997, he attended Santa Monica College, where he played alongside future NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson. Smith’s performance at Santa Monica led him to transfer to the University of Utah, where he became a standout wide receiver for the Utah Utes football team. He set a record for yards per catch with a 20.6 average and was twice selected for the Mountain West Conference all-star team. Smith’s college career concluded with 78 receptions for 1,608 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with 1,365 return yards and 4 special teams touchdowns.

Smith was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (74th overall) of the 2001 NFL draft. He spent 13 seasons with the Panthers, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in total touchdowns (67), receptions (836), and receiving yards (12,197). A five-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time All-Pro, Smith led the NFL in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2005. He continued his career with the Baltimore Ravens for three seasons, from 2014 to 2016. At the time of his retirement, Smith ranked among the NFL’s all-time leaders in career all-purpose yards (19,180), receiving yards (14,731), receptions (1,031), and receiving touchdowns (81).

Following his retirement from professional football in 2017, Steve Smith Sr. transitioned to a broadcasting career, signing a multi-year contract with NFL Network as an analyst. He has appeared on various shows and hosted ‘NFL’s Most Interesting Jobs’ for the NFL’s YouTube channel. Smith is also known for his philanthropic efforts, including partnering with Samaritan’s Feet to donate shoes to the homeless and secretly funding the college tuition of a Twitter personality. In 2019, he was inducted into the Carolina Panthers Hall of Honor, recognizing his significant contributions to the team and the sport.
