Susan Bennett’s name might not be well known, but her voice is. Bennett is best known for being the original voice of Siri, the voice used on every Apple product. Many people think the voice is automated, but Bennett’s career took a turn when she was asked to record for a private company, not knowing she’d become the voice of Siri. Now, she’s heard in millions of homes all over the world every day.
But Bennett’s career didn’t start with Apple and Siri. She studied classics at Brown university, but after college, she soon changed her career path from teaching to public announcement recordings and voice acting. She is also a former backing singer for both Roy Orbison and Burt Bacharach.
Before Apple, Bennett’s voice was used in plenty of well known companies. In fact, she was on adverts that many will still remember, doing voiceover work for McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Fisher-Price and many more. She is also the voice of Delta Airlines, and can often be heard in airports across America.
Apple has never confirmed that Bennett is the voice of their company, and when she was asked to record for a speech construction database, she didn’t know Apple was behind the project, which was kept very private. She had no clue who she was working for or why, but taking on the task has made her one of the most recognized voices in the world, even if no one knows her face.
