About

Sydney Ellen Lucas was born on July 11, 2003, in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of two, she moved to New York City with her parents and two older brothers. Her parents operate a software consulting company. In 2009, at six years old, Lucas underwent heart surgery to address an atrial septal defect. Her older brother, Jake Lucas, is also an actor; they have appeared together in a commercial for Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup and in the 2015 film “She’s Funny That Way” alongside Jennifer Aniston. Lucas has pursued formal training in acting with Diane Hardin and singing with Badiene Magaziner. She also received singing instruction from her mother, Karri Lucas, who holds a degree in vocal performance from DePauw University. Currently, she is a student residing in Manhattan.

Lucas made her Off-Broadway debut in 2013 in “Fun Home” at The Public Theater. Her portrayal of Small Alison in the musical earned her an Obie Award in 2014, making her the youngest recipient of the award at age 10. She also received nominations for a Lucille Lortel Award, an Outer Critic’s Circle Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Drama League Award for this role. When “Fun Home” transferred to Broadway, Lucas continued in her role, which led to a Theatre World Award win and a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 2015 at the age of 11. She concluded her involvement with “Fun Home” on October 4, 2015.

Her career expanded into film and television roles. Lucas has played younger versions of characters for Kristen Wiig in “Girl Most Likely” (2012) and “The Skeleton Twins” (2014). Her television appearances include guest roles in “Law & Order: SVU,” “Royal Pains,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Sesame Street,” and a digital short for “Saturday Night Live.” From 2017 to 2019, she was a series regular as Jeannie McCullough in AMC’s western drama “The Son.” She also portrayed Mary Lennox in a Manhattan Concert Productions staging of “The Secret Garden” at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in 2016.
