Taliqua Clancy

Taliqua Clancy was born in Kingaroy, Queensland, on June 25, 1992. Inspired by Cathy Freeman’s 2000 Sydney Olympics triumph, Clancy pursued an Olympic career. She declined a netball scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport, choosing instead a beach volleyball scholarship at the Queensland Academy of Sport. At 17, she joined the Australian Volleyball program, moving to Adelaide to further her training. Her early career saw her develop into a prominent beach volleyball player, laying the groundwork for her future international successes and Olympic representation.

Clancy’s Olympic journey began at the 2016 Rio Olympics with partner Louise Bawden, where they finished fifth position overall, making Clancy the first Indigenous Australian to compete in Olympic Beach Volleyball. Following Bawden’s retirement in 2017, Clancy re-established her partnership with Mariafe Artacho del Solar. This partnership achieved notable success at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, securing a silver medal. The duo continued their strong performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, earning a silver medal, Australia’s first Olympic medal in the event since Sydney 2000. They also achieved a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Hamburg, demonstrating their consistency and competitive ability on the world stage.

Clancy and Artacho del Solar further showcased their talent with another silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. They continued to compete at a high level, placing fourth at both the 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympics. Outside of competition, Taliqua Clancy is actively involved in promoting sport to Indigenous students, emphasizing education, cultural importance, and sporting opportunities. She also serves as a member of the Australian Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission, contributing to the representation of Indigenous voices within the Olympic movement.
