Taryn Manning was born on November 6, 1978, in Falls Church, Virginia. Raised by her mother in Tucson, Arizona, after her parents’ separation, Manning was involved in dance, karate, and acting from a young age. Her family relocated to California when she was 12. She began her acting career in the late 1990s with small roles in television productions such as “The Practice,” “Get Real,” and “NYPD Blue.” Her film debut was in “Crazy/Beautiful” (2001), followed by notable roles in “Crossroads” (2002), “8 Mile” (2002), “White Oleander” (2002), and “Cold Mountain” (2003).
Manning’s breakthrough came with her role as Nola, a prostitute, in the 2005 film “Hustle & Flow,” a performance that earned her a nomination from the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Awards for Best Breakthrough Performance. The film also received a SAG award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. She continued to build her filmography with roles in independent films and television series, including “Sons of Anarchy” (2008–2010), “Hawaii Five-0” (2010–2019), and her most recognized role as Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett in the Netflix original series “Orange Is the New Black” (2013–2019).
