Ted Gibson is a prominent American hairdresser with a salon based in New York City. He gained widespread recognition as the hair expert on the cable television series “What Not to Wear.” His clientele has included notable public figures such as Anne Hathaway, Renée Zellweger, Kate Gosselin, and Ashley Greene. Gibson’s expertise further extended to working with prestigious fashion houses like Chanel and Prada, cementing his reputation within the high-fashion industry. Early in his career, Gibson taught at a cosmetology school in Minneapolis, where he met his future husband and business partner, Jason Backe. Their collaborative journey began there, evolving into significant ventures in the beauty sector.
Gibson’s career experienced a significant turning point when he transitioned into celebrity styling. An opportunity arose to style Angelina Jolie for two magazine covers, which notably elevated his profile. This event led to a substantial increase in demand for his services among celebrities. Over the years, he has continued to work with a diverse range of A-list celebrities, including Jessica Chastain, Priyanka Chopra, Gabrielle Union, and Debra Messing. Beyond celebrity work, Gibson, alongside Jason Backe, co-founded Ted Gibson Beauty Wellness Science, a beauty line that emphasizes wellness and science. They also launched the Worth Up Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting beauty entrepreneurs through education, coaching, and grants, providing nearly $100,000 in support within two years.
After initially establishing a successful salon in New York City’s Flatiron District, which operated for 13 years, Gibson and Backe relocated to the West Coast. In Los Angeles, they launched the haircare line Starring and, in 2019, introduced “Starring by Ted Gibson,” a salon concept integrating smart home technology and luxury services. This salon was notable for its partnership with Amazon, featuring voice-activated technology and personalized client experiences in “clouds.” The concept was later adapted by Amazon for a smart salon in London. In 2023, after years of dividing their time, Gibson and Backe made a permanent move to Palm Springs, closing their Los Angeles salon to embrace a new chapter, with Gibson continuing to serve private clients in L.A. and Backe working at Saloniste Palm Springs.
