John A. Bollinger was born on May 27, 1950, in Montpelier, Vermont. He became a significant contributor to the field of technical analysis, particularly known for creating Bollinger Bands in the early 1980s. This innovation emerged from his observation that market volatility was dynamic, rather than static, addressing a critical need for adaptive trading bands in financial markets. His technical tool is applicable across various financial instruments, including equities, forex, commodities, and futures, and can be utilized across different timeframes, from short-term to monthly analysis.
Bollinger’s career progression includes developing Group Power, an industry group ranking system, and founding equitytrader.com in 1996, one of the earliest charting and technical analysis websites. He served as Chief Market Analyst for the Financial News Network from 1984 to 1990, where he introduced Bollinger Bands to the public. After FNN’s acquisition by NBC, he assisted with the transition to CNBC and continued to provide market commentary. He established Bollinger Capital Management, an investment management company focused on technically-driven strategies.
