About

Sir Terence Patrick Leahy, born on February 28, 1956, in Belle Vale, Liverpool, grew up in a prefabricated home. His early life experiences and background, including working as a shelf-stacker at Tesco, provided him with a comprehensive understanding of diverse customer groups. He pursued higher education at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), where he earned a BSc in Management Sciences in 1977. Later, he also received a D.Sc. from Cranfield University.

Leahy joined Tesco in 1979 as a marketing executive, embarking on a remarkable 32-year career with the company. He advanced through various senior roles, becoming marketing director in 1984 and a board-level marketing director in 1992. His insights into customer behavior were instrumental in the development and successful implementation of the Tesco Clubcard loyalty program in 1995. This pioneering initiative revolutionized grocery retailing by leveraging customer data to enhance understanding and engagement. His leadership saw Tesco solidify its position as the UK’s largest retailer by 1995.

In 1997, Leahy was appointed CEO of Tesco, a position he held until 2011. During his leadership, Tesco experienced significant expansion under his “four pillars” strategy: strengthening the home market, expanding into non-food items, offering banking and financial services, and increasing international presence. Under his guidance, Tesco’s sales and profits quadrupled, and the company grew to become the third-largest retailer globally. After retiring from Tesco, Leahy continued to contribute to the retail sector and corporate advisory roles, including becoming a senior advisor to CD&R in 2011 and serving as chairman of B&M Retail.
