Joseph Tetsuro Bizinger, born on September 28, 1994, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, is widely recognized as The Anime Man. Raised in a household with a Japanese mother and an Australian father of German and Hungarian descent, Bizinger was exposed to Japanese culture and anime from an early age, an influence that shaped his career path. After graduating from St Paul’s Catholic College in 2012 with distinguished academic achievements, and later from the University of Sydney in 2016 with a degree in Computer Design Technology, he transitioned his passion for Japanese animation into a successful online presence.
Bizinger initiated his YouTube channel in May 2013 with the video ‘Dubbed Anime Sucks!’. His early content consisted of vlogs and analytical discussions about anime and manga. A significant turning point occurred in 2015 when his video “7 Types of Anime Fans” led to a rapid increase in his subscriber count, quickly doubling it and establishing his prominence in the anime community. Following his university graduation, Bizinger relocated to Japan in May 2016, where his YouTube career had already gained sufficient momentum to become his full-time profession. By January 2017, his main channel, The Anime Man, had reached one million subscribers. In addition to his primary channel, he launched a second channel named Joey in February 2016, initially for more personal content, which later evolved to host less formal videos.
Beyond his YouTube endeavors, Bizinger has expanded into various entertainment fields. From 2017 to 2018, he co-hosted the weekly SBS podcast ‘The Anime Show’ with Agnes Diego, discussing anime, manga, and otaku culture. His involvement in Chris Broad’s ‘Journey Across Japan’ series in 2018, cycling through parts of Japan and documenting local life, further broadened his audience. This collaboration continued with ‘Escape to Fuji’ (2020) and ‘The Lost Islands’ (2021). Bizinger also ventured into voice acting, beginning with a cameo in ‘Grisaia Phantom Trigger Vol. 4’ and a narration role in ‘Pop Team Epic’ in 2018, and later a role in the video game ‘No Straight Roads’ in 2020. In February 2020, he co-founded ‘Trash Taste’, a successful podcast with fellow YouTubers Garnt Maneetapho and Connor Colquhoun, focusing on Japanese pop culture and their experiences in Japan. Additionally, Bizinger developed a musical career under the alias Ikurru Kamijou, releasing albums and EPs, and launched his streetwear brand, Nonsense, in 2022.
