About

Timothy Theodore Duncan was born on April 25, 1976, in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He initially pursued competitive swimming, aspiring to an Olympic level, but a pivotal moment occurred in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo destroyed the island’s only Olympic-sized pool. This event, coupled with the loss of his mother to breast cancer in 1990—the day before his 14th birthday—led him to transition to basketball. Encouraged by his brother-in-law, Duncan began playing basketball, overcoming initial awkwardness to become a standout player for St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School.

Duncan attended Wake Forest University, demonstrating a commitment to education by completing his psychology degree before entering the NBA. During his college career from 1993 to 1997, he achieved significant milestones, including being named National college player of the year in 1997, two-time ACC Player of the Year (1996, 1997), and three-time NABC Defensive Player of the Year (1995–1997). He also led the ACC in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and blocked shots in 1996, a first in conference history. These achievements set the stage for his professional career, highlighting his fundamental skills and consistent performance.

Drafted first overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1997 NBA draft, Duncan quickly established himself as an elite player. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 1998 and went on to secure five NBA championships with the Spurs (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014) and three NBA Finals MVP awards (1999, 2003, 2005). Known for his stoic demeanor and fundamental approach, he consistently earned selections to the NBA All-Star Game (15 times), All-NBA Teams (15 times), and All-Defensive Teams (15 times) throughout his 19-year tenure with the San Antonio Spurs. His career culminated in his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 and being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
