Tiril Eckhoff was born on May 21, 1990, in Baerum, Norway. She began her biathlon career in 1999 and made her World Cup debut in 2008. Eckhoff established herself as a prominent figure in biathlon, consistently demonstrating skill and perseverance. Her early career highlights include winning three medals at her first Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014: a gold in the mixed relay, and two bronze medals in the mass start and the women’s relay. The 2014-2015 season marked her first individual World Cup victory, a 7.5 km sprint in Östersund on December 6, 2014, followed by a bronze medal in the mixed relay at the 2015 World Championships in Kontiolahti.
Eckhoff continued to achieve significant milestones throughout her career. Despite a challenging 2015-2016 season due to unstable shooting and form, she secured a gold medal in the 7.5 km sprint at the World Championships in Holmenkollen, Norway, in 2016. She also contributed to the Norwegian women’s relay team’s gold medal win that same year. Her career progressed with continued success at the World Championships, earning multiple gold medals in relays and individual events, including two golds at the 2019 Östersund World Championships in mixed relay and women’s relay. Her outstanding performance in the 2020-21 season saw her win four gold medals and six overall medals at the 2021 Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka, including individual golds in the 7.5 km sprint and 10 km pursuit. She also claimed the 2020-21 World Cup overall title, as well as the discipline titles in sprint and pursuit.
At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Eckhoff added more medals to her collection, including a gold in the mixed relay alongside Marte Olsbu Røiseland, Tarjei Bø, and Johannes Thingnes Bø, a silver in the 12.5 km mass start, and a bronze in the 10 km pursuit. She was recognized for her achievements with the Holmenkollen Medal in 2022. Due to health issues, Eckhoff announced her retirement from competitive biathlon on March 15, 2023. She has also explored designing her own knitted patterns and participates in discussions on climate change in winter sports, highlighting a broader engagement beyond her athletic achievements.
