Tom Hawkins is a celebrated former Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Standing at 198 cm (6 ft 6 in) and weighing 110 kg (240 lb), Hawkins was known for his imposing presence as a key forward, making him one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the game, ranking 13th all-time in league goal-kicking.
Born and raised in country New South Wales, Hawkins moved to Victoria to attend Melbourne Grammar School, where his exceptional football skills earned him a spot on the first XVIII in year ten. He showcased his talent with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and represented Vic Metro in the AFL Under-18 Championships. His impressive junior career included accolades such as the Larke Medal for most valuable player and selection in the All-Australian team. Drafted by Geelong under the father-son rule with the 41st pick in the 2006 national draft, he followed in the footsteps of his father, former Geelong champion Jack Hawkins.
Hawkins made his AFL debut in 2007, quickly garnering attention when former Carlton coach Denis Pagan compared him to league great Tony Lockett. His debut season earned him an AFL Rising Star nomination, and he became part of Geelong’s VFL premiership side. Over his illustrious career, he claimed three AFL premierships, a Coleman Medal, and multiple All-Australian selections, becoming an eleven-time leading goalkicker for the club.
As he entered the 2024 season, Hawkins needed just nineteen goals to reach the 800-goal milestone. However, his season was plagued by injuries and inconsistent form. On August 6, 2024, he announced his retirement at the end of the season, culminating in a final appearance for Geelong’s VFL team, where he scored a goal in a semi-final match against Southport. Hawkins leaves behind a legacy as one of the game’s most formidable forwards and a beloved figure at Geelong.
