Born on June 2, 1975, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Simi Valley, California, Tom Herman’s foundation in football began as an all-conference wide receiver at California Lutheran University, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration in 1997. His coaching career started in 1998 at Texas Lutheran as a receivers coach, followed by a graduate assistant position at the University of Texas at Austin from 1999-2000, where he also earned a master’s degree in education. This early period marked the beginning of extensive experience in Texas football. From 2001 to 2004, Herman served as special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach at Sam Houston State, contributing to two conference titles and runs to the FCS semifinals and quarterfinals. He then moved to Texas State (2005-2006) as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, where his teams consistently led the Southland Conference in total offense, and the 2005 squad ranked eighth nationally in scoring, reaching the FCS semifinals.
Herman’s career progressed with a two-year stint at Rice (2007-2008) as offensive coordinator, where his offenses shattered over 40 school records and achieved national top-10 rankings in passing offense, scoring offense, and total offense in 2008. He then joined Iowa State (2009-2011) in the same capacity, continuing to develop high-performing offenses. A significant turning point came in 2011 when he was appointed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State under Urban Meyer. Here, he won the Broyles Award in 2014 as the nation’s top assistant coach and contributed to the 2015 College Football Championship win. As head coach for the Houston Cougars (2015-2016), Herman achieved a 22-4 record, including a Peach Bowl victory over Florida State and wins against two top-three ranked opponents (Oklahoma and Louisville), earning him the FWAA First-Year Coach of the Year and AAC Coach of the Year awards. He led the Texas Longhorns as head coach from 2017 to 2020, securing a 32-18 record with four straight bowl victories, including the Sugar Bowl in 2019.
After leaving Texas, Herman joined the Chicago Bears in 2021 as an offensive analyst, gaining experience in the NFL. He returned to college football as the head coach for the Florida Atlantic Owls from 2023 to 2024. In addition to his coaching career, Herman has an extensive background in media, having interned and worked in various production roles in sports broadcasting, including as a sports production assistant in Oxnard, California, a highlight coordinator for Fox-TV in Los Angeles, and a producer/production assistant at XTRA Sports Radio in Los Angeles.
