Tom Selleck

Thomas William Selleck was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 29, 1945. His mother, Martha, was a homemaker, and his father, Robert Dean Selleck, worked as a real estate investor and executive. The family relocated to Sherman Oaks, California, in 1948. Selleck graduated from Grant High School in 1962 and subsequently attended Los Angeles Valley College. He later transferred to the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship, where he played for the USC Trojans men’s basketball team and also participated in baseball as a pitcher and designated hitter. While studying business administration, he was encouraged to try acting by a drama coach. He ultimately left the university in his senior year to pursue an acting career, studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse under Milton Katselas.

Selleck’s early career included appearances on “The Dating Game” in 1965 and 1967, and various commercials for products such as Pepsi-Cola, Salem cigarettes, Revlon’s Chaz cologne, Right Guard deodorant, Dubonnet, Close-Up toothpaste, and Safeguard deodorant soap. He took on bit parts in films like “Myra Breckinridge” (1970), “The Seven Minutes” (1971), and “Coma” (1978). He also had a recurring role as private investigator Lance White in “The Rockford Files” during the 1970s. His passion for the outdoors and firearms also led him to prominent cowboy roles in Westerns, starting with “The Sacketts” in 1979.

His career significantly advanced in 1980 with his starring role as Thomas Magnum in the television series “Magnum, P.I.”, which ran for eight seasons until 1988. This role earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1984. During this period, he also starred in films such as “Lassiter” (1984) and “Three Men and a Baby” (1987), the highest-grossing film of that year. Post-“Magnum, P.I.”, Selleck continued to work in both television and film, including a notable recurring role as Dr. Richard Burke on “Friends” in the mid-1990s, for which he received an Emmy nomination.
