Tony Shalhoub

Anthony Marc Shalhoub was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on October 9, 1953, the ninth of ten children. His father, Joseph Shalhoub, an orphan from Lebanon, immigrated to the United States at age ten and later owned a grocery chain. His mother, Helen Seroogy, was born in Wisconsin to Lebanese parents. Shalhoub’s introduction to acting came at age six in a school production of “The King and I.” He pursued his passion for drama, earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Maine and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama. He then spent four seasons with the American Repertory Theatre before moving to Broadway.

Shalhoub’s career progressed through notable roles in diverse genres. His Broadway debut in 1985 in “The Odd Couple” was followed by a Tony Award nomination in 1992 for “Conversations with My Father.” On television, he gained recognition as Italian cabdriver Antonio Scarpacci in the sitcom “Wings” from 1991 to 1997. His film work included appearances in “Men in Black” (1997), “Galaxy Quest” (1999), and “Thir13en Ghosts” (2001). His most prominent role was perhaps Adrian Monk in the series “Monk” (2002–2009), which earned him widespread acclaim and three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (2003, 2005, 2006).

More recently, Shalhoub starred as Abe Weissman in the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (2017–2023), for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2019. He also won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2018 for his performance in “The Band’s Visit.” Throughout his career, Shalhoub has demonstrated a range that extends from dramatic to comedic roles, including voice acting in the “Cars” franchise (2006–present) and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (2014, 2016). His consistent impact on screen and stage has solidified his reputation as a respected and versatile performer.
