Award-winning actor Tyler Johnston has built an astounding acting resume in his native Canada, but is currently best-known for playing Stewart in Letterkenny, a comedy series that broke streaming records for its platform Crave TV and has won several awards, including Best TV Comedy at the WGC Screenwriting Awards. Among his many other recurring roles are Danny Lubbe in the similarly successful comedy-drama Less Than Kind, Alexi Giffords in The Killing, and Tommy Webber in the Kyra Sedgwick-directed TV movie Story of a Girl, a role that won him the Leo Award for Best Supporting Performance.
Johnston was born in British Columbia in 1987. He became interested in acting during high school and was cast in a leading role in a school production of Footloose. He made his screen debut in 2004, with a small part in Nickelodeon sitcom Romeo! The following year, he played his first recurring role: shapeshifter Markko in Zixx, a Canadian sci-fi series that mixed live action and animation. During the same period, he also appeared in several episodes of groundbreaking US drama The L Word and classic Canadian sitcom Godiva’s.
Johnston’s real break, however, came in 2010 when he was cast in Less Than Kind, the show that won him first award nominations and established his credentials in his home country. Ever since then, Johnston has been a regular presence on Canadian screens. In 2016, he appeared in a short film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s 2BOR02B that won awards at film festivals in Canada, America, and Australia. With his current role in Letterkenny the most celebrated work of his career to date, it’s clear that Johnston is still growing in stature.
