Luther Roderick Campbell, popularly known as Uncle Luke and Luke Skyyywalker, is a rapper, promoter, record executive, and actor from the United States. He was the leader of the rap group 2 Live Crew and starred in Luke’s Parental Advisory, a short-lived VH1 show. Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., a case before the United States Supreme Court, was about one of his compositions, which contained a parody of Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.” As a result, Campbell was dubbed “the man whose booty-shaking craziness once compelled the United States Supreme Court stand up for free speech” by the Miami New Times.
The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are, their gold-selling debut album, launched them onto the local scene. They became rap superstars in South Florida. Move Somethin’, the group’s second album was certified Gold and featured the hits “Move Somethin'” and “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.” The album charted at #68 on the Billboard 200 and #20 on Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums. Their third album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be, was certified double platinum and became the group’s best-selling album. The album was declared legally indecent for the first time in history.
I Got Shit on My Mind was released in 1992. Uncle Luke’s first official solo album was released without the help of The 2 Live Crew. On the Billboard 200 chart, it reached #52 and #20 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was from this album that the popular single “I Wanna Rock” was born. Freak For Life, Uncle Luke, Changin’ the Game, Somethin’ Nasty, and My Life & Freaky Times were among his other recordings.
