Valtteri Viktor Bottas was born on August 28, 1989, in Nastola, Finland. His motorsport journey began early, with kart racing at the age of six, inspired by fellow Finn Mika Häkkinen. After studying automotive engineering and completing mandatory military service, Bottas quickly advanced through junior formulae. He achieved significant early success by winning both the Formula Renault Eurocup and the Formula Renault Northern European Cup in 2008. His dominance continued as he became the first driver to secure back-to-back victories at the Masters of Formula 3 in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he won the GP3 Series, further solidifying his reputation as a formidable talent.
Bottas began his Formula One career as a test driver for Williams in 2010, progressing to a full-time race seat by 2013. During his four seasons with Williams, he demonstrated consistent performance, securing nine podium finishes and contributing to the team’s third-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship in 2014. In 2017, he made a career-defining move to Mercedes, replacing Nico Rosberg and partnering Lewis Hamilton. With Mercedes, Bottas achieved his maiden F1 victory at the Russian Grand Prix and played a crucial role in the team’s five consecutive Constructors’ World Championships. He finished as championship runner-up in both 2019 and 2020, highlighting his integral contribution to Mercedes’ sustained success.
After a successful but challenging tenure with Mercedes, Bottas moved to Alfa Romeo in 2022, seeking a new challenge and leadership role. He spent three seasons with the team, later rebranded as Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, guiding them through a developmental phase. For the 2025 season, Bottas returns to Mercedes as a reserve driver, a move he described as “coming back home” with the goal of securing a full-time seat in 2026. He has also committed to joining Cadillac for their Formula One debut in 2026, marking another significant chapter in his racing career. Beyond Formula One, Bottas has explored rallying, gravel cycling, and various business ventures, including owning a coffee roastery, a gin brand, and a stake in an ice hockey team.
