About

Victor Lemonte Wooten, born on September 11, 1964, in Mountain Home, Idaho, began his musical journey at a very young age. Taught by his oldest brother, Regi, Victor started playing the bass guitar at two years old. By the age of six, he was performing professionally with his four elder brothers in their family band, The Wooten Brothers Band. Due to his father’s military career in the United States Air Force, the family moved frequently before settling in Newport News, Virginia, in 1972. Victor graduated from Denbigh High School in 1982, continuing to perform with his brothers at local venues, including the country music theater at Busch Gardens.

His career advanced significantly in 1987 when he moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There, an acquaintance introduced him to banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck. This meeting led to the formation of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones in 1988, a group with which Wooten has been a core member since its inception. His distinctive bass techniques and musicality have earned him five Grammy Awards, and he is the only person to win Bass Player of the Year from Bass Player magazine more than once, achieving this feat three times. In 2011, readers of Rolling Stone magazine ranked him No. 10 in the Top 10 Bassists of All Time.

Beyond his performance career, Wooten is also a dedicated educator and author. In 2000, he established a music program, initially known as Bass/Nature camp, which later expanded into Victor Wooten’s Center for Music and Nature. This retreat in Only, Tennessee, offers interactive educational programs for musicians of all instruments. He also co-leads the “Victor Wooten/Berklee Summer Bass Workshop” at Berklee College of Music, collaborating with Steve Bailey. Additionally, Wooten is the author of the novel “The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music” (2008) and its sequel, “The Spirit of Music: The Lesson Continues” (2021). He also owns Vix Records, his independent record label.
