Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan was born on January 1, 1979, in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Her early life was marked by a strong aspiration for a career in film. She studied sociology at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Mumbai, fulfilling her parents’ wish for her to complete her education before fully pursuing acting. Balan gained early exposure in the 1995 sitcom ‘Hum Paanch’ and appeared in numerous television commercials and music videos, which included collaborations with director Pradeep Sarkar. Despite initial setbacks in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries where projects were shelved or she was replaced, Balan persisted in her artistic pursuit, leading to her eventual breakthrough.

Balan’s film debut came with the Bengali film ‘Bhalo Theko’ in 2003, for which she received critical acclaim. Her Hindi cinema debut in ‘Parineeta’ (2005) marked a pivotal moment, earning her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and a Best Actress nomination. She continued to build her career with commercial successes like ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ (2006) and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ (2007), showcasing her versatility across genres. Despite a period where her choices in more glamorous roles were not well-received, Balan redefined her career by selecting roles that aligned with her convictions, portraying strong-willed women in critically and commercially successful films such as ‘Paa’ (2009), ‘Ishqiya’ (2010), ‘No One Killed Jessica’ (2011), ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011), and ‘Kahaani’ (2012).

This string of successful performances solidified her position as a leading actress and earned her numerous awards, including a National Film Award for Best Actress for ‘The Dirty Picture’. After a brief period of commercially less successful films, Balan experienced a resurgence with ‘Tumhari Sulu’ (2017) and ‘Mission Mangal’ (2019), both of which were celebrated for her performances. She transitioned into streaming films during the COVID-19 pandemic with notable roles in ‘Shakuntala Devi’ (2020), ‘Sherni’ (2021), and ‘Jalsa’ (2022). Her recent film, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’ (2024), became her highest-grossing release to date, further demonstrating her enduring appeal and significant impact on the Hindi film industry.
