About

Vincent Phillip D’Onofrio was born on June 30, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York. His early life involved living in Hawaii and Colorado, and he developed an interest in magic and theater, working backstage in set building and sound production for his father’s community theaters. He pursued formal training at the Actors Studio and the American Stanislavski Theatre, gaining his first paid acting role in Off-Broadway’s “This Property Is Condemned.” He made his Broadway debut in “Open Admissions” in 1984. His early career also included working as a bouncer, bodyguard for figures like Robert Plant, and a delivery man, demonstrating a varied path before his acting career fully took hold.

D’Onofrio’s career marked a significant turning point with his role as Private Leonard Lawrence in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film “Full Metal Jacket,” for which he gained nearly 70 pounds. This challenging role established his reputation as a committed character actor. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, he built a diverse filmography with roles in movies such as “Mystic Pizza” (1988), “JFK” (1991), “Ed Wood” (1994) where he played Orson Welles, and the box-office success “Men in Black” (1997) as the antagonist Edgar “The Bug.” His performance in “The Whole Wide World” (1996), which he also helped produce, garnered critical acclaim, and he received an Emmy nomination for his guest appearance in “The Subway” (1997) from “Homicide: Life on the Street.”

His most widely recognized role came in 2001 as Detective Robert Goren in the television series “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” a part he played for 10 years and which cemented his public recognition. D’Onofrio continued to take on varied characters in film, including a serial killer in “The Cell” (2000), Victor “Vic” Hoskins in “Jurassic World” (2015), and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Marvel’s “Daredevil” (2015) and later Marvel Cinematic Universe projects like “Hawkeye” (2021) and “Echo” (2024). Beyond acting, D’Onofrio has directed several projects, including the western “The Kid” (2019), produced films, and even ventured into music and writing, demonstrating his multifaceted engagement with the arts.
