Vincent Powell is a widely recognised singer who is best known for appearing as a contestant on season 12 of ‘America Idol’, in his audition he impressed the judges with ‘Rock Me Baby’. Powell is a gospel and jazz singer who grew up in Austin, he attended Texas Southern University, where he studied Music Education. Nicki Minaj was particularly impresses by Powell’s performance, saying “it was good old-fashioned. It was a sexy old-fashioned” that “hit me somewhere”.
Powell says that the experience was “an eye-opener”, especially the audition process. Powell has honed his vocal skills as a background singer for gospel star, Micah Stampley, former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett, rapper Scarface and the famous late Whitney Houston. Prior to ‘American Idol’, Powell had released Christmas and Christian worship music.
Powell is passionate about singing, saying that “I’m blessed that all I do is sing”. Powell has used him fame from the show to advance in his career, he has performed in several shows, including a showcase spot in ‘Dancin’ in the Street… Motown & More Revue’ at Miller Outdoor Theatre.
He has shared the stage with famous names such as Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Janet Jackson, Kelly Rowland and many more. He is also CEO for Dress Houston, which is an annual event for fashion designers that Powell started in 2008.
More recently in 2020, Powell released his single, ‘Let Freedom Ring’ and he is currently promoting his single. He wrote the song to express emotional need to protest peacefully for social justice, a very current topic in America in light of the social and political issues that they have faced. The track features many Houston artists, namely Mary Griffin, J Xavier, Julian Ceasar and Genesis Blu. Powell is looking ahead to the release of his debut R&B Soul Album titled V.An
