Vivica A. Fox was born in South Bend, Indiana, on July 30, 1964. Her parents were Everlyena, a pharmaceutical technician, and William Fox, a private school administrator. She graduated from Arlington High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, before moving to California to attend Golden West College, where she earned an Associate Art degree in Social Sciences. Her career in entertainment began in California, initially with roles in soap operas. She appeared in series such as “Generations,” “Days of Our Lives,” and “The Young and the Restless.” Early in her career, she also played Charisse Chamberlain, Patti LaBelle’s fashion designer daughter, on the NBC-TV series “Out All Night.”
Fox’s significant breakthrough came in 1996 with her roles in two successful films. She starred in “Independence Day” alongside Will Smith, a role that earned her an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss and a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The same year, she appeared in “Set It Off,” which also achieved critical and commercial success. These roles established her in Hollywood, leading to further prominent parts. In 1997, she received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Maxine in “Soul Food,” which resulted in MTV Movie Award and NAACP Image Award nominations. Her film career continued with notable performances in movies like “Teaching Mrs. Tingle” (1999), “Two Can Play That Game” (2001), and “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” (2003).
Beyond her acting work, Vivica A. Fox has expanded into producing and directing, demonstrating her comprehensive involvement in the entertainment industry. From 2004 to 2006, she co-starred in and produced the Lifetime series “1-800-Missing,” for which she received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. In 2023, she made her directorial debut with “First Lady of BMF: The Tonesa Welch Story,” earning an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Directing. She has also participated in reality television, including “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Apprentice.” Throughout her career, Fox has consistently taken on diverse projects, building a multifaceted presence in film and television while also engaging in entrepreneurship and brand collaborations. She released a book, “Every Day I’m Hustling,” in 2018, which is a memoir and inspirational guide.
