Wayne Knight

Wayne Elliot Knight was born on August 7, 1955, in New York City, and later relocated to Cartersville, Georgia, where he was raised and attended local schools. He pursued higher education at the University of Georgia, where he was an honor student. Prior to completing his degree, Knight joined the Barter Theatre company in Abingdon, Virginia, as an intern. After a two-year internship, he became a professional actor, earning his Equity card. Following this, Knight moved to New York City and made his Broadway debut at age 23 in the comedy “Gemini” in 1979. He later completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2008.

Knight established himself as a versatile character actor, achieving significant recognition in television for his role as the mailman “Newman,” the antagonist to the main character in the television series “Seinfeld” (1992–1998). Simultaneously, he portrayed Officer Don Orville, a recurring character, in the NBC sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun” (1996–2001). His film career includes notable appearances as Dennis Nedry in “Jurassic Park” (1993) and as one of the detectives in a scene in “Basic Instinct” (1992). He has also lent his voice to numerous animated productions, including as Igor in “Toonsylvania” (1998–1999) and Mr. Blik in “Catscratch” (2005–2007).

Throughout his career, Knight has maintained a consistent presence in entertainment. He has appeared in films such as “Dirty Dancing” (1987), “JFK” (1991), and “Rat Race” (2001). In animated features, he voiced Tantor in “Tarzan” (1999) and Al McWhiggin in “Toy Story 2” (1999). His theatrical work includes roles in Broadway productions like “‘Art'” and “Sweet Charity.” Knight’s engagement in the industry extends to recent projects, such as guest appearances in “Bookie” (2023–2025) and upcoming voice roles in “Among Us” (2025). He has received nominations including a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor for “Jurassic Park” and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for “3rd Rock from the Sun.”
