William Peter Charles Ospreay was born in London on May 7, 1993. His professional wrestling career began on the UK independent circuit in 2012, initially performing as the masked character Dark Britannico. Early in his career, Ospreay wrestled for promotions such as Progress Wrestling, International Pro Wrestling: United Kingdom (IPW:UK), Future Pro Wrestling (FPW), and Southside Wrestling Entertainment (SWE). He joined Progress Wrestling in 2012, entering the Natural Progression Series I tournament and later forming the tag team The Swords of Essex with Paul Robinson. By 2015, Ospreay had won the first Super Strong Style 16 tournament and subsequently defeated Jimmy Havoc to become the Progress Champion, ending a 609-day reign.
His talent drew international attention, leading to his signing with New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 2016, following recommendations from prominent wrestlers like AJ Styles and Kazuchika Okada. Ospreay quickly made an impact, winning the 2016 Best of the Super Juniors tournament, becoming its youngest winner and the first English wrestler to do so. Over his eight-year tenure with NJPW, he captured multiple championships, including the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship three times and the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship once. In 2020, he transitioned to the heavyweight division, forming the United Empire stable and winning the 2021 New Japan Cup. He also held the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship twice, with his second reign ending with the title’s deactivation in December 2023.
Ospreay made sporadic appearances for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2022 and 2023, eventually signing a multi-year deal with the promotion in February 2024. He has since become a two-time AEW International Champion. His career is marked by numerous critically acclaimed matches, with wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer awarding 54 of his matches five or more stars, a record in professional wrestling. Ospreay’s high-flying, high-risk style has earned him the nickname “The Aerial Assassin,” and he has continually evolved his in-ring persona and move-set, incorporating powerful techniques like the Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker.
