Yara Shahidi was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 10, 2000. She began her career at the age of six, appearing in various commercials and print advertisements for major companies including McDonald’s, Ralph Lauren, Target, Disney, Guess Kids, and The Children’s Place. Her early on-screen appearances included a role in “Entourage” in 2007 and a recurring role in “In the Motherhood” in 2009. Shahidi made her film debut in 2009, starring opposite Eddie Murphy in “Imagine That,” which earned her a Young Artist Award nomination. She continued to build her filmography with roles in “Salt” (2010), “Butter” (2011), and “Alex Cross” (2012). From 2012 to 2013, she was a regular cast member in “The First Family” and also played a younger Olivia Pope in two episodes of “Scandal” in 2013.
Shahidi gained significant recognition for her role as Zoey Johnson in the ABC sitcom “Black-ish,” which premiered in 2014. Her performance earned her an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In 2017, she transitioned to a leading role in the spin-off series “Grown-ish,” which debuted in 2018. For “Grown-ish,” she received multiple NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Beyond acting, Shahidi has actively engaged in political activism, founding Eighteen x 18 to encourage youth voting and Yara’s Club, which provides online mentorship. Her advocacy led to a letter of recommendation from former First Lady Michelle Obama for her admission to Harvard University, where she studied Interdisciplinary Sociology and Black American Studies, graduating in 2022.
In 2016, Shahidi signed with Women Management modeling agency, aiming to promote diversity. She co-produced the Academy Award-winning short film “Hair Love” in 2019 and launched her production company, 7th Sun, with her mother in 2020, through which she signed an overall deal with ABC Studios. Her recent acting projects include “The Sun Is Also a Star” (2019), voice roles in “Smallfoot” (2018), “Fearless” (2020), “PAW Patrol: The Movie” (2021), and “My Father’s Dragon” (2022). In 2023, she portrayed Tinker Bell in “Peter Pan & Wendy” and executive produced and starred in “Sitting in Bars with Cake.” Shahidi has been recognized on Time’s “The 30 Most Influential Teens of 2016” list and has appeared on the covers of numerous fashion magazines, solidifying her presence as a cultural influencer and advocate.
