About

Yuta Matsumura was born on September 29, 1989, in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. He began his curling career at the age of twelve. Karuizawa is notable as the birthplace of Olympic curling in Japan, hosting the sport’s first official inclusion in the 1998 Winter Games. Matsumura later relocated to Tokoro, Kitami City, Hokkaido, a significant area for Japanese curling and home to multiple Olympians. His career saw him competing internationally, representing Japan at multiple World Championships and Pacific-Asia Championships.

Matsumura competed as an alternate for the Japanese national team at the 2015 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship. He achieved his first World Curling Tour title in 2018 at the Oakville Fall Classic, followed by a win at the Driving Force Abbotsford Cashpiel that same year. In 2018, he secured the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships title, and in 2019, he led his team as skip at the World Men’s Curling Championship, finishing fourth. He also participated in the 2021 World Men’s Curling Championship. Matsumura announced his retirement from competitive curling in 2025.

Following his retirement from active competition in 2025, Matsumura transitioned into roles as a curling commentator and event organizer. He now contributes to the growth of the sport in Japan, providing insights and promoting curling. This includes writing for platforms like the Grand Slam of Curling’s Rock Channel, where he shares perspectives on the current state and development of Japanese curling. His continued involvement focuses on commentary, event management, and various projects aimed at expanding the sport’s reach both domestically and internationally.
