Born Rachel Catherine Homan on April 5, 1989, in Ottawa, Ontario, Rachel Homan began her curling career at age five at the Rideau Curling Club. Her early talent was evident, as she secured four consecutive provincial championships from 2003 to 2006 in the bantam-aged category. Homan continued her ascent, leading Team Ontario to a gold medal at the 2007 Canada Winter Games. By 2010, her junior team, including Emma Miskew, Laura Crocker, and Lynn Kreviazuk, achieved an undefeated 13-0 record at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships, capturing the national title and earning a silver medal at the World Junior Curling Championships. This early success foreshadowed a distinguished career, marked by numerous victories and a consistent presence at the highest levels of the sport.
Homan transitioned into her women’s career with immediate impact, winning the 2011 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She secured her first Canadian national championship, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, in 2013, a feat she would repeat in 2014 and 2017. Her 2017 Scotties victory paved the way for her first World Women’s Curling Championship title, achieved with a remarkable undefeated run. Homan has since claimed two more World Championship titles in 2024 and 2025, solidifying her status as a decorated athlete. Her career also includes two Olympic appearances representing Canada, at PyeongChang 2018 in women’s curling and Beijing 2022 in mixed doubles. Beyond the ice, Homan has earned numerous Grand Slam of Curling titles, accumulating a record-tying 17 wins, and recently secured her 18th in September 2025. Her consistent performance and leadership have made her a prominent figure in Canadian curling.
Throughout her career, Homan has expertly navigated the demands of elite sport alongside her personal life. A graduate of the University of Ottawa with a degree in Human Kinetics and the University of Alberta with a bachelor’s degree in education, she married Shawn Germain in 2016 and is a mother to three children. Her ability to return to competition and win major titles rapidly after childbirth in 2019, 2021, and 2023 highlights her dedication and resilience. In 2019, The Sports Network (TSN) recognized her as the fourth-greatest Canadian female curler in history, a testament to her enduring influence and success in the sport. Homan continues to compete at the highest level, inspiring many with her commitment to both her family and her athletic pursuits.
