Lady Bunny is an American drag queen, DJ, producer, promoter, and founder of outdoor drag festival Wigstock. Though she’s known best for her stunning self-produced live drag shows, Bunny is a fixture across all avenues of the entertainment industry: in addition to releasing various disco tracks including ‘Shame, Shame, Shame!’ and ‘The Pussycat Song’, she can also be seen appearing in films such as Party Girl, Another Gay Movie, and Peoria Babylon and on television channels such as Comedy Central.
Lady Bunny began her career as a major influence in the 1980s gay scene in Atlanta, appearing in many low-budget films such as Starbooty. In 1984 she moved to New York City, becoming a part of Club Kids, a group of young New York City club personalities famous for their flamboyant behavior and unorthodox costumes. She first organized the iconic Wigstock Festival in 1985, running each year until 2005 and building a reputation as one of the most important events in the city’s calendar. The festival was restarted in 2018 and is set to continue indefinitely.
A vivacious live performer with decades of experience, Bunny frequently takes to the stage at XL Nightclub and in 2010 was featured by gay.com in their series Queens of Drag: NYC. She has recently emerged into the art world, most recently DJing at an art gallery in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a disco themed three-day art exhibition. Recent years have seen Bunny produce and star in drag shows at LGBT dance club La Escuelita: That Ain’t No Lady! and Clown’s Syndrome were both extended for months after sell-out crowds and rave reviews from sources such as the NYT. Both shows have toured the globe from LA to London to Australia, and Clown’s Syndrome is set to be revitalized this fall with updated material.
